Saturday was the bike tour where the boys saw the big “flower,” the art museum, and the Recoleta cemetary.  In the evening, they were introduced to the passion of Argentine soccer.  The stadium was alive with singing and jumping throughout.  The home team, Independiente, pulled out a 1-0 victory.  Sunday:  mass, San Telmo, then off to the airport.

Today started off with an excellent training session with Independiente’s youth team.  Following the workout, the teams posed for a group photo and ate lunch together in the club’s dining hall.  They traded a few shirts and a few laughs while breaking bread.  The boys then had a little time for shopping before heading out in the evening for more barbecue.  Tomorrow:  bicycle tour in the morning and professional game in the evening.  Click on the photos for larger views.

More futbol.  More delicious Argentine cuisine.  More fun today.  The day started off watching Independiente’s first team train.  We will see them play a match on Saturday night.  From their training facility, the boys headed to Estancia La Candelaria, a beautiful ranch in the Pampas (plains) of Argentina.  There, they experienced a traditional Argentine barbecue.  After lunch, the boys headed out on horseback to see the amazing castle and played some competitive table tennis.  Of course, a great pick-up soccer game also broke out.  After some dessert, the boys headed back to the hotel.

The boys had another great day in Buenos Aires.  The day (and photos) began and ended at the Casa Rosada where Eva Peron made her famous balcony speech.  After walking to  Plaza de Mayo, our tour guide/history teacher gave the boys a thorough lesson in Argentine history as we toured the city.  We stopped in la Boca section and walked through the colorful neighborhoods before heading to la Bombonera, the stadium of Boca Juniors.  The tour continued through the Recoleta district and ended with some delicious Pizza.  In the afternoon, the boys had another successful training session with another club before heading to Puerto Madero for a late dinner.  On the way home, we passed through Plaza de Mayo and saw Casa Rosada  again.  Enjoy the photos!  Click on the photos to enlarge them.

Today, the boys first hit Calle Florida (Florida Street) for a little shopping.  The big hit was the head massagers.   And, Coach Donovan hit the famous bookstore….of course.   After a delicious lunch, they experienced everything you must do in Argentina:  Futbol, steak, and tango.  It was a little rainy at the beginning of training leading to a few good photos.  The tango show was fantastic.  Click on the photos for a larger view.

Day one

August 15, 2011

After a short delay in JFK, we made the connection in Santiago, Chile just in time and arrived in Buenos Aires.  Our (big) bus took us to the hotel for a delicious lunch followed by training run by the legendary athletic club Independientes youth coaches.  Fantastic!  Enjoy some assorted photos.
